Rangeshwar Mahadev Mandir: A magnificent structure housing the super-power
Rangeshwar Mahadev is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This beautifully carved stone structure temple is in southern-most part of Mathura. As we all know that Mathura is Land of Lord Krishna thus there are a very few Shiva temples in the city and Rangeshwar Mahadev Mandir is one of them. History:
The name of this temple has a very interesting story behind it. According to the legends, Kansa was a Shiva devotee and he used to worship Lord Shiva here. Due to the fear of death, King Kansa wanted to kill infant Krishna because he knew that Krishna would be the reason for his death. With the same mischief in mind, he called Krishna to Mathura. A wrestling arena known as Rangshala was hence built by Kansa near the same Shiva temple where he worshipped Shiva. Before the wrestling match, it is said that Kansa performed his last pooja to Lord Shiva here. In the same wrestling match Krishna killed Kansa this overjoyed every person living in Mathura then. Since then this temple is named as Rangeshwar Mahadev. Every year on the day before Devuthani Ekadashi the Chaubey community of Mathura replays the same event of Kansa’s assassination by organizing a festival in which a 30 feet Kans is killed by Lord Krishna.
